چکیده

A scattering matrix approach is proposed to avoid numerical instabilities arising with the classical transfer matrix method when analyzing the propagation of plane surface acoustic waves in piezoelectric multilayers. The method is stable whatever the thickness of the layers, and the frequency or the slowness of the waves. The computation of the Green’s function and of the effective permittivity of the multilayer is outlined. In addition, the method can be easily extended to the case of interface acoustic waves. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1467620#

Scattering matrix method for modeling acoustic waves in piezoelectric, fluid, and metallic multilayers

Many ultrasonic devices, among which are surface and bulk acoustic wave devices and ultrasonic transducers, are based on multilayers of heterogeneous materials, i.e., piezoelectrics, dielectrics, metals, and conducting or insulating fluids. We introduce metal and fluid layers and half spaces into a numerically stable scattering matrix model originally proposed for solving the problem of plane w...

On Scattering in Dissimilar Piezoelectric Materials by a Semi-infinite Interfacial Crack

This work is concerned with the diffraction and scattering of plane electro-acoustic waves by an interfacial crack between two dissimilar piezoelectric half-spaces. An exact solution is obtained for the full scattering field around the tip of the interfacial crack that is loaded with both acoustic SH and electric incident waves. First, it has been found that the interfacial crack is not complet...

On Scattering in a Piezoelectric Medium by a Conducting Crack

The work is concerned with the characterization of a Kirchhoff diffraction field in a piezoelectric material. An exact solution is obtained for the full scattering fields around the tip of a semi-infinite crack, which is electrically conducting and is loaded with both SH acoustic incident waves and in-plane electrical incident waves. First, it is found that a conducting crack in a piezoelectric...

Study of the Frictional Surface Damage Using Acoustic Emission Method

In this study, the change at rubbing surfaces has been investigated experimentally using an acoustic emission signal monitoring system. A steel ring is slipped on the surface of  a metallic sheet to simulate frictional conditions. The mechanical disturbances caused by the movement of the ring produce stress waves propagating along the sheet surface. The out of plane displacement of the sheet su...

Design and Application of a Photoacoustic Sensor for Monitoring the Laser Generated Stress Waves in Optical Fiber

Measurement of stress transients generated by a 400ns pulsed HF laser in an infrared fluoride glass fiber has been made using fast time – response piezoelectric film transducer. Acoustic signals up to 12 mV with frequencies ranging in megahertz generated by 21 mJ laser pulse when passed through the fiber axis in the linear region. It is shown that useful information such as onset of non - linea...
